My preferred medium remains acrylics because it is so versatile. Last year I exhibited paintings on slate. During the various lockdowns I have been experimenting with other surfaces to paint on. Eggs was the next project and I have completed works on wooden and ceramic hen’s eggs, ceramic goose eggs and real ostrich eggs. The next project was on wood and I managed to source some “raw” beech wood pizza boards. All have their own challenges in surface preparation but I am pleased with the overall results. The pizza boards required to be pre-treated with GAC100 sealant and all had Gesso (white or clear) applied and finished with W&N satin varnish. The use of an angle poise magnifying glass and some very small brushes was also key the detail I have been able to achieve on the smooth surfaces.
